Refused to decide, so I'm doing it all
The Rook by Daniel O’Malley
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
My thoughts and feelings about this book have changed many times over. I mean, it took me a little over two years to read it, so obviously not the page turner one might’ve thought. But then I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed these last couple of weeks in which I’ve had a bit more time to dedicate to reading for hour-long stretches.
I think the long and the short of it is that it has won me over, now that I’m a its end; I love the protagonist and genuinely laugh when faced with her sense of humour. I even find the ending leaves me a little bereft and I am looking forward to reading the next installment. But, and there must be a but, I found large chunks of the book a slog to get through. I didn’t really enjoy the long stretches of telling, inherent in having a life divulged through a series of written communications. Though a lot of it was interesting, it stalled the story in place and I found the delay less than constructive.
That said, I still love the premise, the story has such a strong start, and as far as urban fantasy goes this is definitely one of the better ones I’ve read. I also recently, briefly, attempting the series on Stan and much prefer the book. So I guess on to Stiletto I go.
