K. L. P.

Photographer of this photo rather than the subject, K. L. P. was a dreamer, a writer, an artist. She was an epic friend and someone I intended to be friends with until we were both little old ladies sitting on a rickety old porch.

“Remember, you can have it all”

K. L. P

On 16 March 2018 I watched one of my best friends die, and it changed everything. Everything in me, everything about me, everything about everything and everyone around me. She was young. It was a young life snuffed before it’s time and so it shook the foundation I’d thought to build around the notion of mortality and lives well-spent.

Denial and anxiety were the most profound partners in the grief I felt and so within that first year, in between building up quite the alcohol tolerance and starting a new job, I decided to do a ’30 days of something new’ challenge. I’m not sure why, it seemed a small way to honour her, a woman who inspired me so much during her life. Regardless, however, in that first year, I tied a-bake-a-day to the Blue Knot Foundation, which aims to help support adult survivors of childhood trauma. I think I just needed some good to come of it.

Since then, I’ve decided to try 30 days of something new every year to commemorate her life and celebrate any who have come into my life in any meaningful way. She was one of my people. She was the first of my people to go. She wasn’t the last, but I will learn what I can while I can, and live for those who can’t. For me, it starts here.
